The Colors of the Monsoon

I have been very irregular with my posts lately. I have a good reason, but I need to get back to blogging regularly. I miss it so! Today I've managed to squeeze out some time- Adhi is napping, all is quiet and I can hear myself think! Today I post on decor. Much, much over due, I know! What can I say. Time is now a precious commodity that is in very short supply for me now that my dd is on the scene and blogging has become near impossible. Just the other day I was trying to get some drawings done for a deadline I had the next day. The dd just had to climb up on my lap and 'supervise' what I was doing. I turned my head for like two seconds and she had somehow managed to delete an entire cadd drawing!

Having a toddler who seems quite determined to 'understand the workings of a camera', figure out death defying ways to climb onto the couch when no one is looking and, one who waits for a chance for the fridge door to open so she can pull stuff out, means our house looks very different to what it did a few months ago. And working on nice little vignettes of the apartment is practically impossible! I have a term for it- Life before Adhi :) Don't get me wrong, I love my dd, but an angel she is NOT! But I do miss being able to create cute little corners of prettiness and then spend a few hours taking pictures. Most of all, I miss sharing my ideas with you guys!

But, as luck would have it, I was looking through old pictures and realised I have a stash of images which I had shot for a magazine a few months ago. It was supposed to be for a Spring issue, got delayed to a Monsoon issue, and then never really happened for some reason or the other. So now I can just share these images with you. I hope you like! I do think this set is so in keeping with the weather we've been having the last few days. I hope they remind you of the rain and the cool breeze that comes with it, and the smell of wet earth that is heavenly and sweet. Enjoy!

More soon, I hope :)

Our Little Green Wall of Frames- Part II

A while back I had done a post about our tiny entrance foyer which I had livened up with a splash of crisp apple green and some art work. It was, if you remember, a work in progress. There have been a few additions since then, a few colorful wooden masks that I picked up from Sri Lanka and a nice modern looking wooden ledge that I picked up from Pepperfry.

The ledge is something that I've always wanted, mainly so I could keep a bowl there to deposit my keys (I'm always losing them, much to the exasperation of the hubs). I came across exactly what I was looking for on the Pepperfry website, was happy to see it was within my budget, and placed the order just before Diwali. It arrived after a little wait, and I excitedly got my carpenter to fix it up.

What I like about Pepperfry is that they have quite a variety of choice in terms of styles ranging from modern and funky to colonial as well as traditional. The one I decided on was a simple, clean-lined design that seemed ideal for our rather cramped entrance. I also didn't want something too traditional looking because of those traditional brass lamps. I didn't want things becoming too ethnic.

The ledge is the perfect addition to our green wall of frames. Finally I have a place for those keys! Ever since it was fixed up, I've been playing around with different combinations and arrangements... of course the hubs looks on, rolling his eyes and shaking his head in amusement, but even he admits that it's so much better than before:)

Still a little more art to be added, but it's getting there :)

There's my cute little Fijian Kava or yaqona bowl in which
I keep my keys

A wooden toy rickshaw I picked up in Sri Lanka

Tea lights and flowers add a nice welcoming touch to the entrance,
which earlier was very unwelcoming :)

When it Rains, it Pours... and I'm Drowning!

So the last few weeks I've been very sporadic when it comes to posting on the blog. Everything's good at my end, but I've been drowning in a pile of work! Don't get me wrong, work is always welcome, but the last 10 days were especially tough.

It's always tough when a new project comes along, there is a sense of excitement about the conceptualising, but most clients are interested in getting the site started, which means slogging over boring old electrical, false ceiling and civil drawings :(  before the good stuff starts.

Been doing a lot of this lately... not fun at all!

But in between all that boring drafting and checking and numbering switch boards, I've been doodling and coming up with ideas for different spaces... as a break from the mind numbing monotony of making electrical drawings.

A welcome break... sketching out concepts

A point was reached a few days ago when I noticed I had started gorging on nutella slathered toast and coffee... chocolate and coffee means I'm stressed and overworked! Lol. Today though, things have eased up, and I got in some time to clean the house and re-arrange a few things. And I decided to relax and click a few pics. Feels good to hold onto a camera instead of a mouse :)

Hopefully the weekend should be quiet and relaxed with no crazy running around. X'mas is coming and I need to get organised :)

Home Sweet Home

One of my favorite blogs, Aalayam, recently completed 100 posts. And to celebrate this milestone the two fabulous ladies behind this blog, Deepa and Supriya, came up with a truly unique and incredibly generous way to celebrate with their achievement... by featuring the homes of fellow decor and lifestyle bloggers. I was absolutely thrilled when Deepa wrote and asked me to contribute to this post with an image that captured the essence of what home was to me.

Thank you Deepa and Supriya for including me ... I'm so honored to be a part of the amazing bunch of bloggers you featured in your 100th post! More importantly, a very big congrats to the both of you.  I wish you lots of success and I know you guys will have loads more inspiring stuff for us to drool over in the future. To see the entire post and the contributions of all the other super talented decor bloggers, hop over to Aalayam for more...

Here are a few images I clicked of our place that I think capture what home represents to me.

"Home to me is a retreat. It’s a place you can escape to at the end of the day and a place you can be yourself. More than current trends, it should reflect who you are, where you’ve come from and where you hope to be. So for me, my home is an amalgamation of the ethnic, the modern and the quirky, but most importantly it’s a place both my husband and I can just be comfortable and be ourselves."

Enjoy your Sunday guys and have a great week!

Our Little Green Wall of Frames

My mind always seems to be churning with ideas about our home. When I'm taking a breather from work, I always find my mind wandering to this. I usually start thinking to myself, 'How can I make our place better?' When I share these ideas with the hubby I'm usually met with amused smiles and eye rolls but I never let that deter me :) Do you?

We are lucky that our rented apartment has a small foyer space just before the hall, which the hubby & I had painted green during our 'making our rented apartment into a home' phase. Lately, I've found myself fixated on our entry wall, which I've always felt was boring and dull. So I decided to sort of fill it up with as many frames as it can take.

Some time ago my in-laws gifted me two lovely brass hanging lamps from Kerala and I've put them up here too. This tiny area is still a work in progress, and I've been adding frames one at a time, but I'm quite pleased with how it's shaping up.

Notice the empty frame... I have a plan for that... will share soon... promise :)

Here Comes the Weekend!

It's Friday again... that time of the week that everyone's been waiting for. After all the driving we did last weekend, both the hubby and I are looking forward to a quiet weekend at home lazing around in our PJs :) But before that we're breaking out the beers and getting set to cheer India as they take on South Africa in the T20 World Cup tonight! Go India!

I also wanted to let you know that I'm extending the deadline for the Fab1 giveaway to 10th April so if you haven't sent in your pictures, you still have a couple of days to more.

More travel posts next week, images from our visit to Alwar and the incredible Chand Baoli, a step well in Abhaneri. I'm currently completely fascinated with step wells and have declared to the hubby that visiting every major step well in Indian is on top of my bucket list :) Of course he rolled his eyes at this and nodded his head with mock seriousness.

Well have a great weekend guys. If you're in NCR and looking for something interesting to do this Saturday evening, head out to Bakheda, Said Ul Ajaib for an evening of Stand Up Comedy. Details here.

With that I'm signing off for the weekend and leaving you with a few images I clicked as part of my #practicemakesperfect series. This is a vignette of a paper mache elephant from Bihar. I picked this cutie up at Dili Haat. I have a collection of tiny elephants and this one is my favorite. I captured these images in some lovely morning light and then tried my hand at editing on Photoshop. I was quite pleased with the results :)

Happy Weekend guys! And I'll see you on Monday.

Happy Days with My New Toy!

I've been a very happy girl over the last few days... the absolutely awesome hubby gifted me a Canon DSLR! After seeing me struggling with my point and shoot for so long, grumbling that my pictures weren't coming out the way I wanted, he got me my new, fantastic toy! And I've been clicking away ever since. A friend jokingly asked me if I was sleeping with it :) That's not too far off mark... it's so difficult to concentrate on work while it's sitting there on the table. I keep wanting to pick it up and experiment. Warning... with all the practising that I'm doing, you are going to be bombarded with a whole bunch of images:) So I hope you'll bear with me...

Yesterday I changed a few cushion covers in our living room. I had sort of grown bored with the old ones, which have been there for ages. I picked up these silk covers by Anshoo Nath from the Windmills Design Festival. I love the colors and the Nandi patchwork motif. They instantly brightened up the space.

I also wanted to remind you guys that there is an amazing give away on the blog this month. A lovely decoupage tray by Design5. I hope that all of you are clicking away and I'm looking forward to seeing your fabulous images.

Of Early Mornings, Steaming Coffee and Solitude

I'm not really a morning person. It's not the waking up that gets to me, I'm an early riser. I guess I don't like talking first thing in the morning, it's the one thing that annoys me above all else. I hate making conversation in the morning. At our home there are strict instructions in place that conversation should be avoided until I've had my coffee and it's had a chance to work its magic :) It's probably a good thing that the hubby is a late riser... and when he does wake up early, its usually to go for his run. The good thing about this is I get my 40 minutes of 'me time' where I can enjoy my 2 toasts and my mug of coffee by myself, and more importantly, in silence:)

There is something about the morning. It has a quality I can't quite put my finger on, it simultaneously captivates and comforts me. There is a certain stillness, a quietness to it that says the world is still not fully awake. And you can hear the chirping of the birds outside, sparrows (we are lucky to have a few around) fluttering around, singing a happy song that complements the soothing cooing of the pigeons.

I love these moments I have that are just mine. I sit on the couch, with coffee mug in hand, and enjoy this solitude while the sun's warm rays stream in from the windows casting a warm glow over the room and forming dancing patterns of light and shadow. The other day I had my camera lying around and I captured a few images that I thought I'd share with you.

Have a great day folks!!!

It's the Weekend!

It's sunny, warm and the birds are chirping outside. Two whole days of no work, no meetings & no deadlines.

Happy days!

Also, a big shout out to all you ladies out there, wishing you a very happy Women's Day! I hope that all of you are being pampered and spoiled and most of all, appreciated for everything you do! Us women are not appreciated enough... I know this because it's only now that I realize how much my mum did for me for so many years and with no thanks and mostly a lot of resentment at all the 'stupid' rules she made me follow. You're the best mama and the person I admire most in the world!

For those of you in Delhi or Gurgaon, if lazing around at home isn't your things, and you're looking for something to do, head out to the Windmills Design Festival in Delhi. It starts today and is on till Sunday evening. Lots of things to see and fun things to do. For more details here is the link to their FB page

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, have a great one guys & I'll see you on Monday!

Where Would We Be Without Flowers?

Hi there folks! Just checking in to say a quick hello. How has the week been so far? The last few days have been really exciting. I was invited for my first food bloggers meet on Sunday and I'm going to be sharing that experience with you very soon! There are also a few interesting things in the pipeline.

I had a great day yesterday... the hubby surprised me with flowers (beautiful pink carnations) and cake... really made my day... well probably my week! What a difference a few days make. On Friday we were all joking that it looked like the world was coming to an end, the way the weather gods were misbehaving. Thunder, lightening, rain... in March? The weather matched my mood. It was a difficult day for me... had to make a few difficult decisions and come to terms with a few hard realities. But that's life I guess... Things never go they way you plan :)

I bought a whole bunch of flowers and chocolate (of course) to cheer myself up... its strange how something as simple as flowers can soothe the spirit and brighten your day. I put them in some vases and old jam jars and kept them all over the place. Nothing like some color to cheer you up.

Finally the sun came out on Saturday, as did my camera and I started clicking away. I'm sharing the ones that came out decently well- well the ones I liked anyway :)

Have a great day guys!

The Joys of Afternoon Tea and Remembering Old Times

This may seem like a rather random post, on a very random topic, but I thought I'd share one of my treasured daily rituals. Afternoon tea. If you are a tea drinker, then I'm sure you'll identify... if not, this will all sound a bit silly and frivolous :)

Afternoon tea is one of my favorite things. It comes at a time in the day when my battery is running low, my mind is wandering and work is the last thing I feel like doing. It doesn't help that I'm a huge caffeine addict and people who know me well know that I'm not a nice person to be around when I'm caffeine deprived. So for me afternoon chai represents not just a caffeine fix, but a 15 minute break where I forget about work, sit down with a nice magazine/book, sip my tea and switch off... no phone, no deadlines, just me, my cuppa and my two Marie biscuits, enjoying the moment. It's surprising how inspiring those 15 minutes can be sometimes :)

That's one of the reasons I try and follow this routine no matter how busy I am. I think it sort of helps to switch off for a bit... the break does me good and I come back focused and relaxed... a much better frame of mind to be in than stressed about deadlines.

I remember when I was working in a design firm, come tea time we would all turn away from our screens, our cutting chai in one hand, a Glucose biscuit in another, and we'd bitch about work, our boss, our clients and life in general. We also shared a lot of ideas in those moments and critiqued each other's work, often ruthlessly. It was so invigorating, and I can't tell you how many ideas took shape from those animated discussions. We have all moved on from those days and have started our own firms, but those 15 minutes represent great times and wonderful memories that I will always cherish. Tea time is one of the few things I miss about working in an office:)

It's been a busy week so far - deadlines and clients who can't seem to make up their minds about anything, which means my timelines are taking a real beating. I sometimes wish I had thought about this aspect of the job a little more before choosing this field :) Well, c'est la vie :) At least it's Friday and I have two days where I don't have to think about work!

I know we all live really busy lives, and it seems like we are always on the go, but I think it's important to sometimes stop and enjoy the little moments, a conversation, a cup of tea/coffee and slow down even, if it's just for a fleeting moment...

Have a great weekend everyone!

Bored, Bedridden and Grumpy!

So I was supposed to be enjoying a nice, relaxing and romantic holiday with the hubby in Kesroli. We had planned to use the beautiful Kesroli Fort Hotel as a base to explore a few places close by. I was especially looking forward to visiting an ancient step well in Abhaneri. But as luck would have it I messed up my back getting a little too caught up in re-potting a few plants, and have been stuck in bed since Thursday!

Did I mention how much I was looking forward to this holiday?! We have't been on a holiday in such a long time and I really needed one. The last few months have been quite stressful and this was a nice break before more stressful months that I see coming up. To make things worse I absolutely HATE lying around in bed... I'm not someone who can laze, much to the amusement, and sometimes annoyance of the DH :) If there's nothing to do, I'll find something to do :) So the whole 'being stuck in bed' is so much worse!

And what is up with the weather? I mean its almost the end of February, and Spring seemed to be slowing coming in, and then all of a sudden the fog, and rain and cold come back! I mean come on... seriously! SERIOUSLY!

Anyway I'm better today... able to sit up for short spells so at least I can get some stuff done! So I thought I'd vent a little... And now that I've had my fill of cribbing, I wanted to share a few images I took a few days ago... before this entire sad fiasco!

It was was a lovely sunny morning and the warm rays of the sun were streaming in through the balcony. It got me inspired to get out my camera and click a few images of our home in Gurgaon... A friend once described our home decor style as New Age Indian, and I love that tag. So here are the images... I'm no photographer mind you, and one or two of them are a bit blurred, but thought I'd share anyway. Enjoy!

I love these traditional brass urlis that I picked up on our last visit to Kerala

Of Festivals, Family & Friends

I think everyone loves festivals. I mean what's not to love? How often can you gorge on food that is absolutely BAD for you and not have to justify it, slack off on exercise without being judged, sleep in, and party till late into the night without having to worry about work the next day? Festivals come around only a few times in a year so I think its best to make the most of these chances, no?

I have to confess that I'm a Christmas kinda girl... it is my absolute favorite festival. Our place is known for the rocking X'mas party we throw every year and I'm NOT ASHAMED to admit that I start planning it around October. My husband is from Kerala, so we also celebrate Vishu and Onam, but although they are special in their own way, they are quite somber and sedate in comparison to the spectacle that is Christmas.

Diwali also falls into the category of big, bold & loud- a festival of generosity & giving, so much like Christmas. But up until this year we never really did anything in a big way. This year I thought why not? Let's start a new tradition at home, and celebrate this festival of lights, that rejoices in the victory of good over evil, light over darkness. It happens to be my sis-in-law's favorite festival, so I thought, 'lets make it special!' And how we did!

We decorated, and there were traditional clay diyas (lamps), string lights hanging from every possible place, tea lights, floating flowers, rangolis- the whole shebang!

(My precious blackboard all lit up & my not so precious 'artwork')

(The view of our building complex from our balcony which we lit with traditional clay diyas)

(Rangoli at the entrance of our home)

(Finally got a chance to light the hanging brass lamps that were a gift from my in-laws)

(Our dining area credenza all decked up in candlelight)

We ate, and ate & ATE! some absolutely awesome chole & bhature made by our friend Neha, who I think makes the best chole in the world. There was also authentic Mumbai vada pav, made by yours truly, and some cupcakes & gulab jamuns. Boy were we stuffed by the end of the night!

But aside from the food & the gifts and the sheer bling of it all, I think what makes festivals so special are friends and family. At least that's why I love festivals. Its having friends over, sharing good food & drink, and catching up on each other's lives. I think that at the heart of every festival the world over, lie two things- love & laughter, and that, more that all the other craziness, is what makes festivals so wonderful.

I hope that all of you had an absolutely awesome Diwali surrounded by family & friends. And I'm sure if you're anything like me, you  are already looking ahead to Christmas & the New Year and all the fun that comes with it.

D.I.Y- Adding some Pizzazz to a Dull, Old Bookshelf

You all know how much I love book shelves. I love them piled high with books, little knick knacks and an assortment of tiny trinkets that are collected through the years. They say that you can know a man by the books he reads, well, I often think that when you look at someones bookshelf, you get a glimpse into their soul, into who they are, their likes and dislikes- basically, what makes them tick.

We picked up this bookshelf from a tiny store on MG road, when we were setting up our flat. I think it was, in fact, the first piece of furniture we bought. So it has a lot of sentimental value. Its a wooden bookshelf, with a walnut varnish. But as our home has slowly taken shape, it was has started looking a bit old and dull. It needed to be spruced up! Nothing that a touch of color couldn't fix!

Before

So with the hubby away over the weekend, I scheduled some major D.I.Y bookshelf painting to revamp this beloved piece of furniture. Off I went to the local paint shop to get the necessary items and also some advice on how to go about it correctly. (I would have asked the painter who works on all my sites, but he is always horrified that 'madam' is painting her own furniture and he insists on doing it himself. And this kinda defeats the purpose of D.I.Y!)

At the paint shop, the uncle behind the counter looked just as appalled when I explained that I would be painting. Although I think in his case it had more to do with the fact that I was a woman, and a relatively small one at that. He did reluctantly tell me what was needed and how to go about it. He also cautioned that the process of sand papering to remove the varnish was really tough. (mental note to myself, listen to uncles who give you advise... he was right, it was really tough and I have a sore shoulder from all the sanding!)

I love D.I.Y paint jobs. Sometimes they come off really well, others not so... but I enjoy the fun of trying and also learning from the mistakes I make. I was sorry though, that I did it when the hubby wasn't there. Not because it was really tough doing all that sanding (although it was and I could have really used some muscle), but because the two of us have great fun doing these things together. We laugh and joke and argue about who the better painter is.

The entire process itself took about 2 days. As you apply more paint, it takes more time to dry. I ended up applying four coats. I think if I had used a wood primer before applying the paint, it would have required only three, but the uncle insisted that the primer wasn't necessary. A mistake, and I should have known better! (mental note to myself... don't always listen to uncles who give you advice, especially when you know better)

Overall I was quite pleased with the results, but my biggest disappointment were the patches in the paint, which happened because I didn't have the muscle to remove the polish completely! But its not very noticeable since most of them are hidden behind books.

So ta-da! The big reveal... here's the revamped bookshelf with a splash of cobalt blue, tying in with the blue photo frames we have up on the wall. Next project is our boring side table, which are also going to get a coat of blue paint!

After

So do you like the new look? write and and tell me what you think. Would love to hear from you!

If you want to add some pizzazz to an old piece of furniture then here's what you will need...

1. Satin Paint
2. Turpentine
3. Paint brush (about 3-4 inches)
4. Sand paper (medium grit)
5. Sand Paper (fine, for smoothing)
6. A clean thin cloth for dusting and wiping down the surface

And here's what I did...

Step 1:
Sanding... Warning!!! make sure you cover up your mouth and nose before starting!
To begin with I used a medium grit (quite abrasive) sandpaper to remove the coat of varnish. This is really, really tough so I would suggest you get 'the one with the muscles' to do it. Its really important to ensure that all the polish is removed. COMPLETELY! If you don't, like me, you will end up with dark patches where the original polish is and it will look quite untidy. Also, ladies, if you want to give it a go, use gloves! I had rough hands for days :)

Step 2:
Sanding with a fine sandpaper (I used no. 815) to smooth out the surface. This part is much easier!

Step 3: The uncle at the paint store didn't tell me to use primer, and even though I knew better, I was a bit lazy and decided to paint without priming the surface. This was a mistake! Please, Please don't skip this step. The paint will take for ever to dry and the finish won't be as neat.

Step 4: Using paper tape, tape the boundary of the surface over which you don't want stray streaks of paint. Like in the image below.

As you can see, I could have done a better job of removing the varnish

Step 5: Paint! You will need to apply 3 coats, if you use a primer. Allow the painted surface to dry completely between each coat of paint.

Step 6: Once the paint is dry, peel away the tape and clean up any spots of paint with turpentine.

Good Luck!!!
